Kingdomino wins Spiel des Jahres 2017!

Kingdomino from Pegasus Spiele convinces the jury with its “quick and easy-to-learn gaming experience”

BERLIN/FRIEDBERG, July 17 2017: Today the “Spiel des Jahres” jury announced this year’s award winner. Two out of the three nominated games came from Pegasus Spiele. In the end, Pegasus Spiele secured the award with Kingdomino.

Kingdomino – as the name indicates – is based on the classical idea of Domino. In contrast to the classic, there are no abstract stones, but instead beautifully designed countryside tiles. With these, 2 to 4 players build valuable kingdoms, trying to score the most points. The jury put it in a nutshell as follows: “Kingdomino lifts the time-honoured principle of dominoes to a new level – without losing any of the sleek elegance of its predecessor.” The gameplay is easily explained: every round, each player receives one tile and adds it to his or her kingdom. Connecting landscapes of the same type, depicting at least one crown, score the desirable points. The jury comments: “the dual mechanics of planning the far-reaching lands surrounding the castle and the clever method of selecting tiles fit together extraordinarily well, they are expertly reduced to their essential components.”

Also from Pegasus Spiele and nominated for the Spiel des Jahres is Magic Maze. This cooperative real-time game lets the players take on the roles of heroes, who visit the local shopping mall for magical supplies in a cloak-and-dagger operation. The aim of the game is to grab the necessary equipment and rush to the exit before the alarm goes off. All the while, sand trickles down the hourglass and – to top things of – talking is forbidden. The “Spiel des Jahres” jury is of the opinion that Magic Maze “creates a completely new playing experience, one where you can’t switch off for a single second”.

The critics’ prize “Spiel des Jahres” has been awarded every year since 1979 and is regarded as the most important game award in the world. It is intended to serve as a first orientation especially for family games in the ever-growing board game industry. The recommendations list for Kennerspiele (roughly "connoisseur-enthusiast games”) includes Captain Sonar and Great Western Trail, also from Pegasus Spiele, as well as the anti-war game Les Poilus from Pegasus Spiele’s distribution partner Sweet Games. Following the nomination of Mmm! as Kinderspiel des Jahres (children’s game of the year) in 2016, Zauberei hoch drei (Wizardry to the power of three) also received a recommendation, adding another honouring for the still young children’s game portfolio of the company.
